NEW MASERATI SPYDER NOW ON SALE IN THE UK

One of the most significant vehicles in the illustrious history of the Maserati marque is now on sale in the UK.

The all-new Maserati Spyder, a striking two-seater cabriolet, combines elegant Italian styling with breathtaking performance and is available in two different model versions. The Maserati Spyder GT costs £65,750 on the road and the Spyder Cambiocorsa costs £68,750. Both versions are now available through Maserati’s 15-strong UK dealer network.

Styled by Italdesign-Giugiaro, the Spyder is the first new Maserati to be developed entirely under the supervision of company owners Ferrari.

Fitted with an all-new 4.2-litre normally-aspirated V8 engine, the new Spyder also pioneers Maserati’s use of a new Cambiocorsa (racing gearbox) transmission and sophisticated new, active suspension system called ‘Skyhook’.

The new Maserati 4244 cc all-aluminium engine produces 390 bhp at 7000 rpm and outstanding torque of 451 Nm at 4500 rpm. This power and torque translates into a maximum speed of almost 176 mph and a zero to 60 mph acceleration time of just 4.9 seconds.

Among its closest competitors – the Porsche 911 Carrera 2 Tiptronic Convertible and the Jaguar XKR 4.0 Convertible – the Maserati Spyder produces the most power and has the highest top speed.

Built in Modena, Italy, the new Spyder is the latest vehicle in a line of new models that is driving the rejuvenation of the Maserati brand, which started in 1999 with the introduction of the 3200 GT Coupe. Maserati sales since then have taken off in the UK. A total of 848 Maseratis have now been sold in the UK since the introduction of the 3200 GT Coupe, compared with 756 over the previous 19 years.

"The 3200 GT Coupe really put Maserati back on the map worldwide and here in the UK too," said Philip Mills, General Manager of Maserati UK. "Our new Spyder is a technological leap forward and will move this exciting brand onto an entirely new level.

"It’s a car which truly embodies the spirit of the new Maserati, which is undergoing a dramatic revival both here in the UK and all around the world."

The new engine, which has a structure that is similar to the latest racing engines – with dry sump lubrication, pump assembly outside the crankcase and head with 4 valves per cylinder – is more powerful and 20 kg lighter than the 3200 GT engine.

TRANSMISSION Transferring the power from the front-mounted engine to the rear wheels is a choice of two transmissions. A conventional six-speed manual transmission is fitted to the GT version and an electronically controlled, hydraulically actuated six-ratio transmission on the Cambiocorsa.

There is no clutch pedal on Cambiocorsa. Instead, it uses F1-style gearshift paddles, a product of Ferrari’s Formula 1 experience, mounted to the steering column and an electronically controlled clutch. There are four different modes of gearshift to suit the driver’s capabilities and driving conditions – ‘Sport’, ‘Auto’, ‘Low Grip’ and ‘Normal’ – which are selected using buttons on the console.

The gearbox itself is identical on both versions and is mounted longitudinally at the rear, contributing to the vehicle’s 53/47 (front/rear) weight distribution. This results in more responsive handling and improved straight line stability.

The manual gearbox on the GT has a conventional clutch pedal with hydraulic control and the gear lever is linked via shift cables.

SUSPENSION The Skyhook suspension system continuously controls the Spyder’s damper adjustments using six sensors. These monitor the movement of the front wheels and the vertical and lateral movement of the car.

The central computer in this system processes the data to control each individual shock absorber to regulate the damper settings. It is a variable system, unlike those on the Spyder’s competitors which are pre-set, and it operates 10 times faster than any other active suspension system.

The ‘Normal’ setting provides maximum comfort and better road holding in all driving conditions. The ‘Sport’ setting firms the suspension and changes the ASR parameters to suit a more high performance driving style as well as linking with the transmission to allow an increased speed of gear change.

The benefits of the ‘Skyhook’ system include a reduction in pitch, roll and vertical movement of the car. It provides continuous and infinite adjustments to improve ride and handling and produces an immediate reaction to the road conditions.

Stylish 18-inch 15-spoke alloy wheels, fitted with 235/40Z18 tyres at the front and 265/35Z18 tyres at the rear, further enhance roadholding on the Spyder.

BODY DESIGN Although the new Spyder bears a resemblance to the 3200GT Coupe and shares several design cues, the Spyder is not simply a convertible version of the Coupe. It is an all-new design. Most obvious changes are at the front end in the bonnet and front bumper and at the rear where new lamps have been adopted. It is 220 mm (8.6 inches) shorter than the 3200 GT Coupe.

There is a new fully-automated, lightweight fabric, convertible hood, utilising an electro-hydraulic operating system, with a Plexiglass rear window. This easy-to-use arrangement reduces vehicle weight and maintains a constant boot area, leaving enough room for two golf bags at all times.

INTERIOR Inside, the Spyder boasts a luxurious specification. The full leather interior includes ergonomic powered seats with two position memory on the driver’s side. They have been redesigned with longer cushions, an integrated headrest and power lumbar adjustment. Behind the seats, there are body-coloured roll hoops with leather fronts.

There is a state-of-the-art information centre with a 5.8-inch colour screen that displays air conditioning, trip computer and audio information, and, where fitted as options, GSM telephone, navigation and on-board telematics information. Climate control air conditioning is standard along with a single CD player.

SAFETY AND SECURITY Safety and security are ensured by the Spyder’s state-of-the art bodyshell – which meets the new EEC/USA collision standards – driver and passenger front and side airbags, seat belt pre-tensioners and twin roll bars and a factory fitted alarm and immobiliser.

The 4-channel Bosch 5.3 anti-lock braking system with ASR electronic traction control and Brembo brake discs is standard fitment. The system has been uprated with large diameter brake discs – 12.99 x 1.26 inches at the front; 12.20 x 1.10 inches at the rear – and four piston callipers to improve the braking by 35 per cent, requiring less braking effort from the driver.

A "peace-of-mind" support package for customers includes a three-year/unlimited mileage manufacturer’s warranty, specific Maserati insurance cover available through Marsh Private Clients and a range of funding options available through Maranello Financial Services.

COLOURS AND OPTIONS Metallic paint is standard and there is a choice of 15 colours including three new shades: Blu Mediterraneo (electric blue), Grigio Nuvolari (silver grey) and Verde Goodwood (dark green). There is a choice of 10 shades of leather upholstery and four for the hood.

Minor detail enhancements include the return of the historical oval Maserati shield on the bonnet in addition to the trident on the grille.

Options on the new Spyder include cruise control, rear parking sensors and xenon headlamps with washer system, which provide twice the power of conventional halogen lamps.

Like the 3200 GT, the Officine Alfieri Maserati personalisation programme also offers numerous possibilities for clients to customise the constructional elements of their Spyder.

"The new Spyder is a truly outstanding car in every way – in performance, in looks, in quality and all-round driver enjoyment. It’s a car with Latin flair and one that our customers and dealers in the UK are already extremely passionate about," said Philip Mills.

He added: "While the glorious 3200 GT Coupe was the first car to be launched under Ferrari’s ownership, the Spyder is the first Maserati to be developed entirely under Ferrari. With that pedigree, we know that the Spyder will continue the magnificent success that we’ve already enjoyed with the Coupe over the past two years."

NEWSFLASH: For immediate release 24 January 2002
NEW COUPE MARKS END OF 10-YEAR US ABSENCE FOR MASERATI IN THE UNITED STATES.

The worldwide rebirth of Maserati continues this week as the international show debut of the brand new Coupe heralds the return of Maserati to the US market after a 10-year absence.

After being revealed for the first time on 3 January 2002 at the Los Angeles Auto Show, the new Maserati Coupe will then be shown at the prestigious Detroit Auto Show next week, where it will be displayed alongside the recently-introduced Maserati Spyder.

Both the Spyder and Coupe are available as Cambiocorsa and manual GT, and feature state-of-the-art technology throughout.

The new Coupe features all the technical specifications introduced with the Spyder model, including the new 4.2 V8, 390 bhp normally aspirated engine, the new electrically actuated gearbox - named Cambiocorsa, Italian for racing gearbox – and Skyhook suspension system. In addition to this, the Coupe offers the comfort of four full seats.

Thanks to the success of the 3200 GT Coupe and of the new Spyder, Maserati has moved to the forefront of the GT sports car segment with its prestigious, highly individual models which offer a perfect combination of high performance and great comfort.

Coinciding with the introduction of these models over the past three years, Maserati has brought its manufacturing facilities up to maximum efficiency: The company has thoroughly updated its manufacturing equipment starting with the production line, which is now one of the most advanced in the world for small production numbers.

An all-new building and a tower housing the new corporate headquarters will be completed in the next few weeks, together with a multi-storey car park for the 400 company employees. Works on a second assembly line will start soon afterwards.

A total of 400 million Euros have been committed to a five-year restructuring plan ending in 2006, an investment which equals 20% of the average yearly sales.

Up to now, Maserati’s efforts have yielded substantial results. The number of vehicles sold increased from 666 in 1998 to 2027 in 2000. Sales for 2001 hovered around the 2000 mark. In fact, 2001 was a consolidation year, since manufacturing of the Quattroporte model was discontinued and production was slowed down because of the start-up of the Spyder model.

In Maserati’s leading markets worldwide, Germany was top of the list with 344 cars sold, followed by the UK (309) and Italy (270), with Japan, France, and Switzerland trailing (updated to 30 November, 2001).

Once the second assembly line is completed and becomes fully operational in 2002 and new Coupes and Spyders are in full production, the company plans to strongly increase sales to more than 3,500 cars annually.

The North American market is expected to become the leading Maserati market, as it already is for sister company Ferrari. The US market is planned to absorb about 40% of total Maserati production.

Maserati is currently represented in 38 markets worldwide.

Maserati in North America.

The two models with which Maserati returns to the US and Canadian markets embrace advanced technology, featuring a 4.2 litre V8 engine that produces 390 bhp and provides a top speed of 175 mph. Interiors combine Maserati’s timeless elegance with modern sophistication and safety.

Maserati North America was established in January 2001 and is based in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey. The team dedicated to Maserati's return to North America has completed its initial planning and organisation work and is now focusing on the marketing strategy of Maserati products.

The return of Maserati cars on American and Canadian roads is scheduled for the first quarter of 2002, when the new Maserati Spyder will reach showrooms. Sales forecasts for Maserati North America's first year are for 1200 cars, making the U.S. the brand's leading export market. In early 2004 Maserati’s model line will be complete with the introduction of a four-door saloon designed by Pininfarina.

Maserati will appoint 31 dealers throughout North America (28 in US, 3 in Canada). The majority of current Ferrari dealers will also represent Maserati.

About the new Coupé.

The new Coupé replaces the 3200 GT and will be formally unveiled at the Detroit Motor Show early next month.

The 177mph Italian exotic receives the bigger, normally aspirated 4.2-litre V8 from the Spyder, and Maserati claims the extra 1000cc more than make up for the lack of turbochargers; the 4200 is quicker off the mark than the already rapid 3200.

Visually, the new coupé is distinguished by subtle styling tweaks. It gets a new bonnet, while conventional rear lamps replace the boomerang items.

The new car is slightly longer (at 4523mm) but is otherwise unchanged. Weight is marginally up to 1670kg.

At the business end, the 4244cc V8 breathes through 32 valves to push out 390bhp at a frantic 700Orpm while peak torque of 3331lb ft arrives at 4500rpm. Extensive use of alloys keeps engine weight down to 184kg, relatively light for a big eight. Lubrication is through a dry sump and the throttle uses a drive-by-wire system.

Standard transmission is a six-speed manual, but an F1-style nudge gearshift will be available, with manual shifts or full automatic cog swaps. Badged Cambiocorsa, drivers use two paddles behind the steering wheel to shift gears. They can also select four shift patterns: normal, sports, winter or fun automatic.

Handling is boosted by the rear-mounted gearbox transaxle, which helps weight distribution. Buyers can also specify the electronically controlled Skyhook damping system which lets drivers choose between comfort and sport settings.

Massive braking is promised by a Brembo braking system using ventilated discs and four-piston callipers. The latest Bosch anti-lock is standard.

The new coupé should manage 0-62mph in 4.9sec, 0.2sec faster than the 3200 GT.

Maserati claims improved packaging makes the cabin comfortable for four adults while the boot is said to swallow two golf bags. Front-scat passengers will welcome the extra 25mm height and 15mm legroom. Leather trim, CD player, climate control and twin front and side airbags are part of the standard kit.

MASERATI UNVEILS ITS GORGEOUS NEW SPYDER IN THE UK.

Maserati’s stunning new two seater Spyder was revealed for the first time in the UK today (Saturday 17 November).

As the covers were pulled off the gorgeous convertible sports car at the annual Scottish Motor Show in Glasgow, Maserati announced the UK price of the new car, which goes on sale early next year.

With an on-the-road cost of £68,750 for the Cambiocorsa version, the price of the new Spyder compares favourably with its main rivals, the Porsche 911 Carrera 2 Cabriolet Tiptronic and the Jaguar XKR 4.0-litre Convertible.

However, the new Maserati, with its winning blend of quality, high performance and desirability, outperforms all of its rivals on power, acceleration and top speed.

Fitted with an all-new 4244 cc lightweight alloy V8 petrol engine producing 390 bhp and 451 Nm torque, the new Spyder is capable of a top speed, where permitted, of 175 mph and a zero to 60 mph acceleration time of just 4.9 seconds.

Styled by Giorgetto Giugiaro, of the famed Ital Design studio, the Spyder is the first new Maserati to be developed entirely under the supervision of company owners Ferrari. A radical innovation on the Maserati Spyder is the electronically actuated six-ratio transmission ‘Cambiocorsa’ which offers computerised gear selection through actuation ‘paddle’ levers fitted behind the steering wheel.

The ‘Cambiocorsa’ transmission, which is a product of Ferrari’s Formula 1 experience, has four specific modes: Normal, Sport, Auto and Low Grip. These modes are linked to the electronic traction control system and, where fitted, the variable ‘Skyhook’ suspension setting option. This allows the driver to select the optimum combination of transmission, suspension and traction settings to match conditions and driving requirements.

The Skyhook suspension system continuously controls damper adjustments using six sensors monitoring the movement of the front wheels and the vertical and lateral movement of the car. This system, which reacts 10 times faster than any other active suspension system, vastly improves ride and handling characteristics.

Standard equipment on the Maserati Spyder includes 18-inch 15-spoke alloy wheels, electronic traction control, a powerful Bosch 5.3 anti-lock braking system and a fully automatic powered hood in lightweight fabric, which folds into a separate compartment with no intrusion on boot space.

Inside, the Spyder boasts a luxurious specification which includes a full leather interior, air conditioning, remote central locking, powered seats with two memory settings on the driver’s side, power lumbar seat adjustment and an electronic ‘info centre’ with a 5.8-inch colour display for climate, audio and trip computer controls.

Safety and security are ensured by driver and passenger front and side airbags, seat belt pre-tensioners, body-coloured and leather-faced roll bars and an alarm and immobiliser.

On revealing the new Spyder at the Scottish Exhibition Centre in Glasgow, General Manager of Maserati UK, Philip Mills, said: “It’s a car which truly embodies the spirit of the new Maserati, which is undergoing a dramatic revival both here in the UK and all around the world.

“The new Spyder is a truly outstanding car in every way – in performance, in looks, in quality and all-round driver enjoyment. It’s a car with Latin flair and one that our customers and dealers in the UK will feel extremely passionate about when it arrives in our showrooms soon.

He added: “While the glorious 3200 GT Coupe was the first car to be launched under Ferrari’s ownership, the Spyder is the first Maserati to be developed entirely under Ferrari. With that pedigree, we know that the Spyder will continue the magnificent success that we’ve already enjoyed with the Coupe over the past two years.

For drivers who prefer a conventional manual transmission, the Maserati Spyder GT will offer this option when it arrives in the UK in the summer of next year. Prices of the Maserati Spyder GT will be announced when it goes on sale in May.
