AT THE FRANKFURT MOTOR SHOW MASERATI BRINGS ‘DRIVER’S CAR’ TO LUXURY SALOON MARKET

Maserati unveiled the Quattroporte to the press at the Frankfurt Autoshow today.

  • Quattroporte delivers a sporty-drive and sumptuous four-seater comfort

  • Right-hand drive, 170 mph saloon goes on sale in the UK from Spring 2004

  • Maserati’s new Quattroporte, which makes its world debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show in Germany today, relaunches the concept of the Italian luxury saloon, combining driving pleasure and performance, with style and elegance – the characteristics of a true Maserati.

  • The new flagship model for Maserati goes on sale in Europe during January 2004, with right-hand drive production starting late spring. Prices and the final specification for the Quattroporte on the British market will be announced in January and Maserati UK anticipates the availability of between 100 and 150 cars during the year.

  • Maserati has designed the Quattroporte to be a luxurious limousine with a passionate Italian nature, a genuine driver’s car – utterly involving and sporty, entertaining in every circumstance, to be driven and enjoyed everyday, in all weathers and capable of generating rewarding emotions rather than being merely coldly functional.

  • Beneath the Pininfarina-styled, dynamic and sinuous lines, that give the Quattroporte the look of a real Grand Tourer, are sophisticated engineering attributes which will make that GT promise a reality. Placing of the engine behind the front axle and the gearbox in unit with the rear-differential, creates a new first in weight distribution for a front-engined Maserati. The 47% front, 53% rear, weight split brings huge benefits in terms of traction and handling balance.

  • The electro-hydraulically actuated, Maserati Duo Select six-speed gearbox is fully automatic, but offers a level of responsiveness and significant weight savings not possible with a conventional torque-converter system. In Auto Mode, the gear change is programmed for maximum comfort, but drivers will be able to select manual-mode and change gear using the steering-wheel mounted paddles. In Sport Mode, the overall settings for gearbox, suspension, traction and stability controls are all adjusted to make the Quattroporte an even more sporty drive.

  • The 400 bhp V8 engine is tuned to generate more than 75% (250 lb ft) of torque from 2,500 rpm, with maximum torque (333 lb ft) at 4,500 rpm. Maserati it accelerate to 100 kph (61 mph) in only 5.2 seconds. The all-aluminium, double-wishbone suspension features Maserati’s unique electronic Skyhook multi-mode damping control, as standard.

  • Like other models in the Maserati range, Quattroporte will enjoy a 3-year warranty and it is expected to be classified in insurance group 20.

NEW MASERATI QUATTROPORTE GIVES ITALIAN FLAVOUR TO THE LUXURY SALOON MARKET

  • The Quattroporte marks the triumphant return of Maserati into the luxury saloon market.

  • Alongside the Coupe and Spyder, this flagship model is a new interpretation of the high performance, luxury Italian saloon first unveiled by Maserati back in 1963.

  • The new car is the fifth generation sporting the Quattroporte name. The values remain unchanged. A unique prestige automobile that combines performance, style and elegance.

  • Pininfarina’s masterful styling underlines the pleasure of possession with an extraordinarily spacious cabin, while the possibility of personalisation down to the smallest detail declares the importance of choice.

  • The revolution in the classic architecture is thanks to the positioning of the engine behind the front axle and the use of a sports-derived transaxle rear-mounted gearbox in unit with the differential. The result: an ideal weight distribution for optimal roadholding and handling balance.

  • The sophisticated electro-hydraulic gearbox is fully automatic, but allows the driver to opt for a sportier gearchange by selecting the manual setting and using the steering wheel-mounted paddle shifts.

  • Fifteen bodywork colours, three types of wood (rosewood, mahogany, and briarwood), 10 shades of leather and a wide range of specific options mean a high degree of personalisation using the very best of Maserati’s trademark Italian taste and design.

  • The new Quattroporte also boasts some impressive vital statistics.

    Engine: 400 bhp, 4.2-litre 32-valve Maserati V8.

Performance: Maximum speed in excess of 170 mph.

Dimensions: length 5052 mm, width 1895 mm, height 1438 mm, wheelbase 3064 mm.

  • Such performance capability coupled with its distinctive styling, makes the Quattroporte the choice for those seeking true individuality.

  • The new Maserati Quattroporte will make its UK debut in Spring 2004.

SPORTS CAR BUILDER AND RACING LEGEND BRIGGS CUNNINGHAM II DIES AT 96.

Briggs Swift Cunningham II, 96, a renowned competitor in sports car racing and competitive sailing, died July 2, 2003 at his home in Las Vegas from complications of Alzheimer’s disease.

From the 1940s to his last race in 1965, Cunningham was a fierce sports car racing competitor who also skippered the Columbia to win the 1958 America’s Cup. After winning many road races in the United States, he was the first American to challenge the Europeans in the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1950.

In 1950 he established an automobile manufacturing and development company to build his own cars to compete with the Europeans. The first Cunningham C-1 was designed around a Cadillac engine. His most successful sports car was the C-4R, which won multiple races in the 1953 and 1954 U.S. racing seasons. Cunningham’s winning designs helped establish American automobiles as credible Le Mans competitors and won the respect of European and American racing enthusiasts. He also established the American racing colors: white body with blue strips down the middle.

In addition to his status as the first American to race in Le Mans, Cunningham also set the course for American leadership in the America’s Cup yacht racing challenge. In 1958, after a 21-year hiatus of the event, he won the race in the syndicate’s 12 meter yacht, 'Columbia' which established a winning tradition for American yachts that would last until 1983. In yachting circles, he is known as the inventor of the 'Cunningham', a device that allows one to adjust the tension on the luff of a sail.

He also played a part in the development of the Chrysler Hemi '300' high-speed engine and all fin- and water-cooled brakes in the 1950s.

After retiring from racing, Cunningham and his wife Laura opened the Cunningham Automotive Museum in Costa Mesa, California, to display his personal collection of automobiles. The museum closed in 1985, and the collection of cars was sold to Cunningham’s lifelong friend, Miles Collier Jr., who keeps the collection in a private museum in Florida.

With Miles Collier Sr., he formed the Automobile Racing Club of American (ARCA) in 1934. Cunningham was also a founding member of the Sports Car Club of America, and he was member number one (the oldest living member) of the New York Yacht Club.

Cunningham also received accolades and numerous awards in automotive car racing and sailing circles.

He was noted for his philanthropic work including contributions to, Hills school for Boys Pottstown, PA, Mystic Seaport, CT among many.

Cunningham was born Jan. 19, 1907 to wealthy Cincinnati financier Briggs Swift Cunningham and his wife Elizabeth Kilgour in Cincinnati, Ohio. The senior Cunningham was the principal financier and part-owner in the ventures of two young partners who developed a bath soap that floats: William Cooper Proctor and James Norris Gamble. Proctor was the Godfather of Briggs Cunningham II.

He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Laura (nee Cramer) of Las Vegas, son Briggs S. Cunningham III of Danville, Ky., daughters Lucie McKinney of Green farms, Conn., and Cythlen Maddock of Palm Beach, Fla., and step-sons Bill Elmer and Joe Elmer, nineteen grandchildren and thirty one great grandchildren.

Services will be Aug 8, 2003 at 2:30 p.m. at Pacific View Cemetery, 3500 Pacific View Dr, Corona Del Mar, CA. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Alzheimer’s Association.

    Briggs Cunningham was a great enthusiast and patron of Maserati. In 1955, he purchased three Tipo 300Ss (#3051, 3052 and 5053) and a 150S (#1657). He also raced Tipo 60s (#2462 and 2468), a Tipo 61 (#2459), Tipo 63s (#63.002 and 63.006) and Tipo 151s (#151.004 and 151.006). He also commissioned a 5000GT by Michelotti (#103.016).
